Motivation Mondays: Run This Year!

Last year I set a goal to run at least 500 miles in 2013. When I set it, that was a stretch for me because the last few months of 2012, I struggled to even hit my monthly goal of 40 miles a month. But I knew if I buckled down, 500 was attainable. Then the long run bug bit me. And by the end of 2013, I had met that goal and ran a total of 649.08 miles.

In addition to running 3 half marathons and doing the 14 in 2014 Challenge this year, I’m also participating in #RunThisYear2014 to keep me motivated on reaching my new mileage goal!

Run This Year

So what is #RunThisYear?

Well, I’m glad you I asked. It’s a free running challenge and community to help keep you motivated to run as much as you can! This year’s challenge has 3 options:

  1. Run the year in miles: 2,014 miles in 2014.
  2. Run the year in kilometers: 2,014 kilometers = 1251.4 miles.
  3. Set Your Own Goal! Participate by selecting a challenging mileage total for yourself and go for it!

The third option is ideal for new runners or someone starting the challenge later in the year. I’m personally going with the 3rd option and set a goal of running 1,000 miles in 2014. Considering I ran 649 miles last year with just one half marathon on the docket, I’m pretty sure 1,000 miles is definitely attainable this year with 3 half marathons on the docket.

This year I will more focused on incorporating strength training, yoga and stretching and rolling in order to keep myself injury free so that I can meet that goal!

So how can you participate? Easy peasy!

First things first! Go register at!

  1. I am not doing any challenges as of right now, but I have heard lots about Run This Year.

  2. I’m doing Run This Year for the first time, and I decided to do 2,014 miles! I ran 1,943 last year, so I figure I just have to work a little harder and be a lot more careful about not getting injured. 🙂

    • Wow! That’s a lot of miles! I’m hoping to gradually increase year after year as I learn to be more consistent and stay injury free.

  3. I probably should join the Run This Year group since I kind of made it an unofficial goal to run 2,014km this year. I’ll have to go check it out!

  4. You are involved in some great challenges. Since I am taking Feb – June to heal I don’t know if I will hit any big mileage goals with 4 months of down time.

    • The good thing is that they all kind of intertwine and that helps, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to do them all. Plus it helps keep me motivated. I think it’s great that you’re taking that time! I know it’s been frustrating with one thing after another but with this time to rest, you’ll be healed up and back at it before you know it!

  5. Although running has been slow so far it will be majorly picking up now, I just got accepted and will be running my 1st marathon in less than 4 months!
