This year I participated in Jen and Jill’s 13 in 2013 challenge. I also set two main running goals; run my first half marathon and run a total of 500 miles. With the help of the challenge, I met both goals with flying colors.
I broke the 500 mile mark in September. In fact, up until today I ran a total of 649 miles. That’s almost 150 miles over my goal. Last year I tried setting a goal of 40 miles per month. I struggled to make that happen. Then something clicked. And I started running on a more structured schedule. I started training for races. The 13 in 2013 challenge helped me reach that goal because it kept me motivated with those races. You can look at the races as mini goals to the bigger goal. The way to meet a goal is to plan. Having “mini goals” along the way help keep you on track.
In November I ran my first half marathon – the Savannah Rock n Roll half marathon. I could have tried to go for a spring half, but I was honestly nervous and opted for a fall half. In fact, it wasn’t until the last half of the year that I finally made up on mind on which race I was going to do. Yes I was putting it off. But I did it! That half marathon was my final race for 2013 making a total of 19 races both virtual and in real life.
Well in 2014 I will be running 3 half marathons thanks to my Rock n Roll Tour 3 pass. So naturally to help keep me on track I decided to participate in the 14 in 2014 challenge.
If you’re interested in joing, head over to Fitness, Health and Happiness to sign up! It’s a great way to keep motivated! If you’re worried about expenses, don’t. You can do both virtual and real life races. There are several virtual races available throughout the year and Jen and Jill will even put on a few to help you meet your goal! Good luck and cheers to running strong in 2014!
Are you participating in the 14 in 2014 Challenge? Do you have a major 2014 running goal?
