What’s on my Docket for the Fall?

Okay, summer is officially over and school is back in session! Do you know what that means?

I’m already registered for a few fall races but I’m also eyeing a few others. Here are the races that I’m currently registered for:

1. Fall 5 and 10 Mile Race Series
Earlier this year I participated in Laura’s 5 by the 5th Virtual Race Series. For the fall, she is hosting another virtual race series that focuses on longer distances. Of course I’m doing this race series too! I’m so proud at how I’ve grown in my running that this was perfect for me. A few years ago if you had told me that I’d be running 5 miles like it was nothing, I would have told you that you were crazy. Well, I guess I’m the crazy one for doubting myself. This race series will run from September through December. Whatever mileage you registered for will need to be completed by the 5th of each month.

2. Run For Our Troops 5k
Being an Air Force brat, the military always holds a special place in my heart. I have not only family members that have served, but also very dear friends that have served and even are still serving. So for 9/11, I will be running for the troops.

3. Ran Tanner Home Run 15k
RUI formed a team and I’m joining other RUI members for this October race. It’s an annual run/walk event that benefits the Ray Tanner Foundation. The foundation is “dedicated to the betterment of economically and medically disadvantaged children and their families.” 1

4. Savannah Rock and Roll Half Marathon
At the beginning of this year, I set a goal to run my first ever half marathon in 2013. Now’s the time to put my money where my mouth is. I finally settled on one for the fall. I originally wanted to do the Savannah Rock and Roll half but figured one close to home would be better. As the year went on, I just couldn’t find a half marathon in town that I really really wanted to do, so I was excited to hear that some of my friends had decided to do the Savannah Rock and Roll half. It sucks that I missed the early registration price though. I’m so excited!!

There are some races that I’m eyeing and will decide later if I want to register. I participated in a few of them last year.

1. Dam Run 10k
I run the dam all the time yet I’ve never done this race. It’s later this month so if I decide to register, I’ll work it into my half marathon training schedule somehow.

2. Hammer the Hills
This October race benefits the Central South Carolina Habitat for Humanity. I’ve volunteered for this organization in the past and helped build a home for someone. How moving it was. I’d love to volunteer again, but this is also a great race to participate in since they receive 100% of the proceeds.

3. Governor’s Cup
I’m still toying with entering this race because they have an 8k option. I know that I’m definitely not doing the half marathon since I’m registered for Savannah. This one is on the back burner though since I’m still trying to decide which races I can do financially.

4. Sleigh Bell Trot 5k
I’ve done this race two years in a row and I like running at night with the Christmas lights. However, it is way over crowded so this wouldn’t be something I’d run for a PR but more for fun. (If I decide to do it again this year.)

5. Runway 5k
I’ve heard about this race last year. It’s supposed to be flat and fast! I mean, it’s on a runway so it better be flat and fast!! I’m so intrigued about this race that it’s definitely on the top of my list. This is most likely a definite.

6. Jingle Bell 5k
I did this one last year too. At the time, I wasn’t running hills on a regular basis and I didn’t think there were any hills…until we rounded the corner. I wouldn’t mind doing this one again this year to see how well I can do this time. That little incline should be a breeze now!

7. Bayler’s Birthday Bash
I ran this race a couple years ago. It’s in honor of Bayler Teal who died at the age of 7 from Neuroblastoma, brain cancer. The race is held every year on Bayler’s birthday, Christmas Eve. The family holds this race to honor Bayler and raise money for the children’s hospital. The year that I ran it, I didn’t know anybody there. I had just recently joined up with the Happy Wheels running team but didn’t know anyone on the team other than Tracy Rankin who runs the Columbia Chapter of Happy Wheels. She knew Bayler so this race hits close to home the heart for Happy Wheels, which is why I did it. I would love to do it again.

8. Cold Winter’s Day
I’ve seen this race but have never participated. It’s on my list so maybe this year I’ll try it. It’ll be a good way to keep me motivated to keep running during the cold winter months.

What races do you have on your calendar for the fall?

See you on the road!

  1. Looks like you have an awesome list going for you! I love mapping out all the races I want to do and then trying to figure out how they fit in with my training schedule for my big goal races. Have a great weekend!

  2. I’ve run the Baylor’s Birthday Bash and loved it, you should do it again! Also do the Jingle Bell Run, I’m assuming you would be doing the Columbia one but we do have one here in Mt. Pleasant. I am on the committee for it, so I’m going to promote running it regardless of which city you do it it :).

I also feel like the James Island Connector Run on Nov. 2 would look really good on that schedule, hehe.

    * Francis Marion Dirt Dash half: tomorrow
    * Crossbridge Pancake 5K: Sept. 21
    * Darlington Marathon: Sept 28
    * Pajama run for cancer 5K: Oct 26
    * James Island Connector 10K: Nov 2
    * Jingle Bell Run MTP 5K: Dec. 14

    • I hate that I missed Baylor’s birthday bash last year, but I seriously think I’m going to do it this year.

I really did like the Jingle Bell run plus it was fun running it with fellow RUI members. That may also be a definite as well!

I really really do want to do the connector, but considering my expensive speeding ticket I got in Virginia and the home repairs I’ve had to do (which ended up going outside of my original budget when first knowing it was needed), I’m going to be tight with money. It doesn’t look like it’s in the cards this year…but if not this year, it will be a definite YES next year!

I’m jealous of the dirt dash. Isn’t that the trail run? I wanted to do that. I can’t wait to read your recap of it. Good luck! Looks like you’ve got a great race calendar for the fall too!

  3. Oh my gosh, all these races look like fun but I’m going broke counting up all the race entries. Brooklyn Active Mama did a Runway Run 5K and it sounded like a lot of fun from her recap.

    • Tell me about it! I’m scared to add up those “maybe” race registration costs! I really need to set the budget and decide that way. And I really really really want to do that runway race!

  4. Isn’t the fall racing season the best and the worst at the same time?! It is the best because there are so many fantastic opportunities to get out there and race, whether it be running, swimming, biking, or all three! It is also the worst because I can never decide which races I want to do. I’m actually struggling with it right now. All the races around here are expensive and, even if it was a good idea to do all the ones I want to (which it isn’t), there is no way I could afford to enter them all! What’s a girl to do?!

    • Haha! Alaina get out of my head!! ๐Ÿ˜‰ You totally read my mind…I know exactly how you feel!! If only money grew on trees, then all runners would be able to run all races!!!!!!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Loving your fall race schedule!! Mine is all crazy including 2 more half marathons, one in OBX!! The Savannah half sounds awesome though! I “had” a race budget but I pretty much blew threw it – races that pop up are just too tempting. ๐Ÿ˜‰ have fun!!

    • Thanks Mar! Race budgets are so hard because there’s so many races!! ๐Ÿ™‚ I can’t wait to get this first half under my belt. Hopefully I’ll like it enough to do more! Maybe I’ll have more on my schedule for next year!

  6. Wow! You have a lot going on!! So glad you’re joining us for the virtual series. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • So true Laura! And that’s just my race calendar…throw in some work, training and every day life and I feel like I need more hours in the day! ๐Ÿ™‚ And thanks for hosting this virtual race series!!

  7. It looks like you have a great and diverse list of fall races.

I just ran the Tupelo 14.2 last Sunday. Upcoming, I have the following races:
    9/13 Cooper Young 4 Miler
    10/5 Tap ‘N Run & Memphis Zombie Hunt 5K
    10/20 4 Bridges Half Marathon
    10/26 The Color Run Memphis
    11/1 True Blue 5K
    11/2 Midsouth Championship Half Marathon
    12/7 St. Jude Half Marathon
    12/23 Festivus Virtual 5K
All of this is is leading up to the WDW Marathon in January

    • Wow Kyle! You’ve got a busy race schedule! October looks the busiest! Good luck in all your races and thanks for sharing! ๐Ÿ™‚ FYI…I went to St. Jude Catholic Church when I was younger!
