Get Motivated Mondays: Running up that hill…

If you read about my fitness goals, then you may remember that one of my long term goals was to improve my running by incorporating proper training methods. This would include intervals, fartleks, and hill training!

My run route doesn’t include any hills, however the neighborhoods I pass by do. So the plan in the future is to alter my route to include a couple of these hills. But in the meantime, I can put the treadmill to good use for that!

Have you ever taken a minute to really look at those pre-programmed routines on the treadmill? I cannot tell a lie, I have not. I had no intention of ever using one, so I never gave it a second thought. Truth be told, I never thought I would be able to do one.

Last week I decided to give one a go. I really need to focus on proper training methods with my running, so what better way to start than with hills? {I know, right?} I chose the pre-programmed routine that would reach a 10% incline and the fastest I would go would be 6mph. That I can handle. {Short legs club right here!}

While there were times that I felt like I could have gone faster, I stuck to it and allow the routine to run it’s course. When all was said and done, I did a total of 2.61 miles in 40 minutes. At first I thought that was horrible. Then I had to remind myself that half the time I was running uphill, so naturally the mileage would be lower.

Dare I say it? I think I may be using this again. I should open my eyes to see what other pre-programmed routines are useful to me. :) I was also told, when I bought this treadmill, that I would be able to connect to a computer and download additional pre-programmed routines. This may just be the thing that motivates me to put that treadmill to good training use. {Though I do prefer to run outside…}

Do you use a treadmill as part of your training?

Have you ever tried one of those pre-programmed routines?
